I have always wanted an accent wall in my home somewhere. I love the pop of color or texture a fun wall can give to a space. With all of this extra time on my hands, I was finally able to paint our third bedroom to create an office space like I have been wanting to do. I was going for a minimalistic vibe with white walls and pops of black, gold, and wood pieces.
I was very pleased with the fresh look that the white paint gave the room, but it still felt like it was missing something. So, I went to Pinterest for some inspiration and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to DIY an accent wall in the small nook where I had placed my desk.
In my "research" on Pinterest, I only looked at pictures. I didn't actually check out any of the products others have used, and since we've been in quarantine, I've only went to Walmart to buy my necessities. So, on my next grocery run, I thought I'd run by the paint section and just see if there were any black, indoor paint options. Luckily, I found just what I was looking for. Here are the products I used:
Walmart's "Color Place (Ready-to-Use) Interior Paint" in semi-gloss "Onyx Black" was exactly what I needed to achieve the look was going for! This quart size can of paint was only $10. However, it took VERY little paint to complete the accent wall. I couldn't find a smaller sized can, but even if I could, I believe I would have a good amount of paint leftover.
For my brush, I used a wall and trim brush I already had purchased from Lowe's, but I am sure that Walmart would have plenty of brush options as well. I would not think that you have to be too picky about the brush that you use. My only suggestion is that it is an angled brush if you are painting slim"strokes" like I did. Other options would include wide brush strokes for a larger wall (use a straight edge brush for this) or dots (use a small brush or even your finger for this option). There are so many possibilities when it comes to accent walls. If you are too afraid to experiment with brush strokes, a fun and fool proof option for an accent wall is just to paint the entire wall a bold color. Make sure to Pinterest some ideas because there are so many options. You are sure to find some inspiration!
I started painting my wall by simply making small strokes in all directions. I had no strategy other than wanting it to look "unplanned". I knew if I tried to paint in a line, I'd start painting in a curve, so I didn't attempt that! Some people use a yard stick or a tape measure and a pencil to measure and mark where they want to paint, but I was too eager to get started!
As you can see, I was not too particular when it came to my brushstrokes. As soon as I started, I was worried that my wall would look like a mess, but I was more than pleased when the entire wall was finished. But, don't forget that if you do make an unfixable mistake as you are painting, you can always just paint the entire wall with the paint you were using! You will still have a fun accent wall with the color you chose! I also suggest starting at the bottom of your wall or in a place where your furniture will cover the wall to get some practice in! You could even practice on some newspaper before you start painting on your wall!
Here is my before and after! The wall paired perfectly with my black desk and a wicker basket in the corner. This was such a fun project, and I am so pleased with how it turned out. If you've been contemplating painting your own accent wall, I highly suggest you go for it! This only took me about 10 minutes and $20, and it adds so much to the space! Some great places for an accent wall are laundry rooms, guest rooms, offices, half-baths, or even entryways if you are feeling brave! Whether or not an accent wall is your style, I hope this post inspires you to be creative and try new things in your home!
