My Skin Care Routine and Tips

Seeking some inspiration for blog content, I asked my followers on IG what they would like to see. My skin care routine was something that was requested. I never considered myself to have a skin care routine or to have products I swear by, but when I stopped to think about it, I realized I actually do. Having a skin care routine has never been a huge part of my life. I have been blessed with good skin, and I am so thankful for that. I definitely have flare ups every now and then, but I have noticed that as long as I take care of my skin, it stays pretty clear.

I am no expert on skin care, but I am learning more and more everyday. The older I get, the more important taking care of my skin becomes. I am sure many of you feel the same way. So, if you want to know my skin routine and favorite products, keep reading!

The first thing I want to make sure everyone reading knows is this:

Make-up remover wipes DO NOT remove all of your makeup!

Removing your makeup does not count as a skin care routine. I thought this for years, but I have learned that you can almost never remove all of your makeup by only wiping it off. If I am really going to clean my face, I have to follow up with a cleanser.

The face cleanser I use is the "Neutrogena Deep Clean Invigorating Foaming Face Scrub." It's only about $6.oo. I purchased this product probably around a year ago, and you can see how much I still have left. I will use this product maybe 3-4 times a week in the shower or after I take off my makeup before bed. (I haven't been wearing much makeup lately.) It has the most refreshing cooling sensation, and I honestly look forward to using it! If you use it often, it can be drying. I always use a moisturizer afterwards, which you can read about below.

For this next product, I am definitely no longer in the "drugstore" category for skin care. Unfortunately, this product will cost you a whopping $85.00! Before you run, let me tell you why I LOVE this stuff! The "Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment" is probably the most glamorous thing I own. I'm only half way joking, but this stuff is seriously amazing. First, I need to point out that even though this tube is tiny, I've had this same tube for 2 and a 1/2 years. I've got a few more months worth, and I will definitely be purchasing more of this! There's a couple of reasons this product has lasted me so long. First, it is not a daily cleanser. As you can see in it's name, it is a "treatment." This product is too intense to be used daily. The directions say no more than 2-3 times a week, but I actually just used mine once a week, if that. I would plan my uses around certain events as well. For example, I'd use it the night before my wedding. The other reason why it lasts so long is because you use very little product. I only need about a popcorn kernel size! The key is making sure you scrub it into your skin for about 1-2 minutes. Think of it like a mask; it won't absorb into your skin. Apply it and let it sit for about 2-3 minutes and rinse. I use this product in the shower! I'm not one who usually spends money on high end beauty or makeup products, but this stuff is worth it. It makes my skin baby soft immediately!

As I mentioned above, it is important to end your skin care routine with a moisturizer. Most cleansers are super drying and, if used alone, this defeats the purpose for wanting healthy, glowing skin. I am currently in love with the "Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream." This product is also pricey, but I believe it is worth it! My jar is tiny at 15mL, but a 50mL jar is $68.00. I couldn't find the smaller size to link for you guys. I've been using my little jar for nearly a year, and I still have plenty left. I'm probably only half way through with it! I can't imagine how long a 50mL jar would last! Again, you only need a teeny tiny amount of product for this stuff, and it seriously leaves my skin so bright and hydrated! I love it so much!

I have never used this product, but I have used Aveeno lotions before. I wanted to include a drugstore moisturizer. This product, the "Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with Soy", is just $8.00, and it may be a great, more affordable option if you aren't wanting to spend on the higher end in stuff! It also has SPF 30!

More Tips on Skin Care

While skin care products can be super helpful, there are other things I make sure to do to keep my skin clear! Here are some more tips:

1. Be gentle with your skin- The winter and summer can be some harsh conditions for your skin. Its important to be aware of what you are putting your skin through! For example, I got a bit too much sun last week and my forehead started to peel. This week, I haven't used any cleansers and I haven't been wearing much makeup. I just use my moisturizer every night, so I can give my skin time to heal.

2. Give your skin a break- Makeup everyday is a lot for the skin. Sometimes, it just needs a chance to breathe. Its just like your hair. Giving your hair a break from heat tools gives it a chance to grow and become healthier. I have noticed when I give my skin a break for maybe a week, it becomes brighter and clearer on its own!

3. Drink water- I feel like everyone says this, but it really does make a difference. The older I've gotten, the more aware I have become of what I'm putting in my body. Everything is fine in moderation, but nothing beats drinking just plain ole water! There are so many health benefits to drinking water, especially for hair and skin!

4. Change your sheets- I also feel like this is a no brainer, but its something you may not have thought about. It is sooo important to change your sheets/pillowcases regularly. This plays a major role in taking care of your skin. If you also struggle with body ache, this could be why. I suggest changing your sheets weekly!
